QDU Presents: 2010 Chancellor's Cup!

The Queen’s Debating Union (QDU) is pleased to invite you to the 2010 Queen's Chancellor’s Cup, located in Kingston, Ontario. The tournament will run from Friday, November 5th – Sunday, November 7th, 2010.

Debating Style and Format
The tournament will consist of 5 rounds of British Parliamentary debate using standard Worlds speaking times of 7 minutes, with a break to semi-finals on Sunday. There will also be a Novice Final. The style guide will be based on WUDC’s, with a similar knowledge level expected of competitors. More information, including a formal style guide, will follow closer to the tournament date.

Adjudication
We are very proud to announce that Adam Hetherington will be our Chief Adjudicator. Adam's accomplishments include being a North American Quarter-Finalist, HWS Round Robin Finalist, North American 3rd Place Speaker, and Nationals Quarter-Finalist. He was the Deputy Chief Adjudicator of Chancellor's 2009 and has judged at a variety of other tournaments. Adam is also just a swell guy. The QDU will be appointing an internal DCA at a later time. Our committed and experienced membership will make up a substantial portion of the judging pool, but we are also committed to ensuring a pool of experienced external judges.

We are instituting a standard n/2 (rounded down) judging requirement. (i.e. If you are sending 6 teams, you must send 3 judges but if you are sending 5 teams you may send 2). Teams are allowed to exceed their judging requirement if they so desire. We will waive the registration fee for any judge who has previously broken at Worlds (either as a judge or as a debater). However, these judges will not count towards an institution’s judging requirement.

If a person has judged at 6 CUSID tournaments, or 3 total outrounds of any CUSID tournaments or 1 outround of any of Nats, NorAms or Worlds they will automatically be considered an "experienced" judge. If your club has someone else they plan on sending as a judge that does not meet these criteria but you think should be considered experienced, please submit their name to Adam along with a brief paragraph explaining why they are experienced and he will decide.

Experienced judges will count as 1.5 towards your school's judging requirement.

At least 1 week before the tournament please submit a list of all judges attending to Adam Hetherington (7awah (at) queensu (dot) ca) with a list of their judging experience i.e. tournaments attended, breaks, etc.

Tabs
Our Tabs Director will be WuDi Wu, who has tabbed eight tournaments to date, including three National Championships and a North American Championship.

Food & Socials
Chancellor’s is known for having awesome food and socials and we intend to live up to that reputation again this year. Debaters will be provided with dinner on Friday; breakfast, lunch, and a banquet dinner on Saturday; and a hot brunch on Sunday. We will be having the Friday night social at the same location as last year, Lone Star Texas Grill, a bar in downtown Kingston, a fantastic venue that boasts good food, lots of space and a relaxed atmosphere. The cost of attending and enjoying the beer for the Saturday night social that will be provided is included in the registration fee. We are happy to say that both socials will be all-ages.

Registration
Registration opens today.

Registration will be $130 per team and $65 per judge. Please make out your cheques to:

We are imposing an overall team cap of 64 teams but there will not be a school cap. Hybrid teams are permitted.

We will be imposing a sliding deposit policy. Schools must pay 50% of their total fees four weeks prior to the tournament (Oct. 8, 2009) and the full fee 2 weeks prior (Oct 22, 2009). We will not be accepting fees at the tournament. Please contact Kaya to indicate the number of teams and judges that you would like to send prior to sending your cheques. In this way, no money will have to be returned in the event that the tournament cap is exceeded. Teams are considered registered once deposits have been received. Deposits and final payments are nonrefundable.

Please send Kaya the following information when you register:
School Name, number of teams, number of judges, names of team members, names of judges, dietary requirements, (veggie, vegan, halal, kosher, allergies, etc.) and billeting requirements.
