Resources

If you read any of these sources on a regular basis, you will see your understanding of debate issues increase tremendously, and you will find generating examples to be much easier.

The Economist: Economist.com

This is the debate standard. It has articles on a very wide variety of locations and topics, and the detail and objectivity of analysis is exceptional. An interesting fact about The Economist is that its articles never display the name of the individual author – the entire staff strives to speak with one voice.

Congressional Research Service Reports: http://www.fpc.state.gov/c18185.htm

This is an encyclopaedic database of reports prepared to brief congressmen on current legislative issues. The reports are often really long and detailed, but the introductions provide very clear, concise analysis of a wide variety of issues. Over 700 reports are created each year, but many of them are never made available to the public.

BBC World News: http://news.bbc.co.uk/

Lots of good stuff here. Like the Economist, this is a good site to check for daily news updates. A particularly useful section of this site is the “country profiles” which has short briefings of the major political issues and characteristics or every country in the world. Knowing a little about the main issues in many countries is really important because international relations cases pop up quite frequently, and a little knowledge can go a long way to securing victory.

Stratfor: www.stratfor.com

This is an interesting source for International Relations (IR) information that often focuses on strategic/geographic concerns to explain foreign policy. While many of the articles are off-limits to non-subscribers, there is some good stuff here for free. The “George Friedman on Geopolitics” section in particular has some great articles.
